The Ausangate circuit is considered a demanding trek due to its constant high altitude—most of the route stays above 4,000 metres. However, the daily walking distances are moderate and the terrain is steady rather than technical. Travellers who have acclimatised in Cusco for at least two days usually find the trek manageable with a consistent pace.
Accommodation is fully camping-based. Tents are set up each afternoon at designated areas near lakes or valleys, offering peaceful and scenic spots to rest. Nights are cold but the camps are sheltered and organised, with a dining tent, sleeping tents and a separate kitchen area. While simple, the set-up is comfortable and designed for high-altitude conditions.
Because the entire route is at high elevation, spending time in Cusco beforehand is essential. Most travellers acclimatise by taking it easy for two days, staying hydrated and avoiding heavy meals. Some choose to hike shorter trails around Cusco first, which helps the body adjust. Gentle preparation makes a noticeable difference once the trek begins.
Temperatures drop well below freezing at night, particularly between Upis and Ausangate Qocha, where the altitude is highest. Mornings are frosty, afternoons can be mild and sunny, and wind is common near the passes. Most travellers bring a warm sleeping bag rated for low temperatures to ensure a comfortable night’s rest.
