Most travellers with moderate fitness can complete the hike, even without previous trekking experience. The most demanding part is the ascent to the Salkantay Pass due to the altitude, but the rest of the route varies between gentle slopes and easier descents. Taking your time, staying hydrated and allowing two days of acclimatisation in Cusco makes a noticeable difference.
Trekkers usually give a duffel bag of around 5–7 kg to the mule team, which carries personal belongings, camping gear and additional clothing. You only walk with a daypack containing essentials such as water, sunscreen, snacks, extra layers and your camera. Anything not required for the trek can be safely stored in Cusco.
Trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for the long descent after the Salkantay Pass, where the terrain can be rocky and uneven. They help reduce pressure on the knees and improve balance. You can bring your own or rent a pair in Cusco before the trek.
