Why is this Lares trek to Machu Picchu 4 days the best?

An off-the-beaten-path alternative to the classic Inca Trail

If you're looking to reach Machu Picchu but want to avoid the crowds of the classic Inca Trail, the Lares trek 4 days is your perfect match. This route takes you through remote Andean valleys where the landscapes are untouched, the silence is sacred, and every step brings you closer to the heart of the Andes.

Unlike the traditional route, this trek feels personal, open, and raw. You’ll walk through places where few tourists go, giving you space to connect with the land, the mountains, and yourself.

Authentic encounters with Quechua communities

What truly sets the 4 day Lares trek to Machu Picchu apart is the human connection. Along the way, you’ll pass through villages like Huacahuasi, Patacancha, and Willoq, where the Quechua culture remains alive and proud. You’ll see thatched stone houses, llamas and alpacas grazing freely, and children running through mountain fields wrapped in bright handwoven blankets.

You'll be welcomed into local homes, witness the weaving of intricate textiles, and feel what it's like to be part of a rhythm of life that hasn’t changed in generations. These are not staged encounters—they are real moments shared by real people.

Perfect mix of mountain adventure and living culture

This trek gives you the best of both worlds: a physical challenge with rewarding landscapes, and a cultural immersion that goes far beyond typical sightseeing.

You’ll bathe in the natural hot springs of Lares, sleep beside a high-altitude lagoon under the stars, and finally arrive at Machu Picchu not just as a visitor, but as someone who’s walked, learned, and connected deeply with the Andes.

The Lares trek to Machu Picchu 4 days isn’t just a hike—it’s a meaningful journey that stays with you long after the trail ends.

Lares Trek 4 days' itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco to Lares hot springs and Choquecancha

Your adventure begins early in the morning as we depart Cusco and head into the Sacred Valley, eventually reaching the village of Lares. After about 4 hours of driving through breathtaking Andean scenery, we’ll stop to relax in the natural hot springs—the perfect way to prepare body and mind for the journey ahead.

From there, we hike to Choquecancha, an archaeological site with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. After exploring the ruins and soaking in the silence of the Andes, we return to Lares for dinner and set up camp beside the hot springs, with access to a night soak under the stars.

Day 2From Lares to Ipsaycocha through Huacahuasi

+

After breakfast, we meet our horsemen and pack horses and begin a steady climb through Huacahuasi, a remote Quechua village where traditional life is lived at 3,600 meters above sea level. Here, we’ll visit a local home and see how families live, weave, and raise llamas and alpacas in harmony with the mountains.

In the afternoon, we continue hiking toward Ipsay Pass (4,450 m / 14,596 ft)—the highest point of the trek. The views of Mount Veronica and the surrounding peaks are spectacular. Just beyond the pass lies Ipsaycocha, a beautiful mountain lagoon where we set up camp for the night, surrounded by silence and stars.

Day 3Ipsaycocha to Patacancha and Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes

+

After two challenging days, today’s hike is more gentle and relaxed. We descend into the valley and reach Patacancha, a high-altitude community known for its incredible textiles. You’ll have time to meet local artisans and learn how their intricate weavings reflect daily life and Andean cosmology.

We continue through Willoq, another traditional Quechua village, before reaching Ollantaytambo, where we’ll enjoy lunch and take the train to Aguas Calientes. The ride is a dream: the highlands slowly give way to lush cloud forest as you get closer to Machu Picchu.

That night, we stay in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes, resting before the big day.

Day 4Visit to Machu Picchu and return to Cusco

+

At dawn, we catch the early bus up to Machu Picchu. Arriving before the crowds, you’ll explore the citadel during a guided tour of about two hours, learning about its sacred temples, agricultural terraces, and hidden meanings carved into stone.

After the tour, you'll have free time to explore on your own—or, if you’ve booked in advance, climb Huayna Picchu for stunning views of the entire complex. You’ll return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (optional) and then board the train and bus back to Cusco, arriving around 9:00 PM—tired, fulfilled, and forever changed.
